ReplyDeleteOh I know! Me too! He's so knowledgeable and makes it sound so exciting to watch! You can definitely tell he was a stellar athlete in his days. But I have to say I enjoy him talking about his son and being a father more. The stories are just so darn entertaining and funny!!!

DeleteJimmy sounds a little high and mighty with the sobriety talk but that's because he's done it. Don't believe he ever said it's the right way, nor the only way. He simply points out the horseshit excuses people use to continue imbibing their poison, and how the trashing of recovery programs are based on many misconceptions.
Years of listening to OnA should tell you that Jimmy still has his addictions. Whether he was fully matured or not, he knows himself better than we do. Add in the fact that he works in a profession where he is surround by addicts. One slip could turn Jim Norton into Artie Lange.

DeletePersonally I think it's commendable that he got clean at an age where most spend their free time finding new ways to get even more fucked up. Sure his advice isn't for everyone but everyone is different and I mean, really.. who takes medical advice from a comedian seriously? As the Bison said, he merely points out the lame excuses people use to avert any form of personal responsibility.
Do i have to be an expert on baseball to comment on Jeter, Bison? jesus. I love Jimmy and his advise show. He gives great advise and really knows what he's talking about with sobriety. And as SerialX said, he's great at pointing out people's excuses. However jimmy is a "do as i say, not as i do" guy. While he has stayed clear from booze and drugs, he has simply replaced that one addiction with another, sex addiction. making him a "dry drunk" of sorts. I'm sure he continues to struggle with that addiction as well, but to just discredit SOME of the things Doug was talking about so quickly, i felt he could have handled differently.

DeleteJimmy is a sexual deviant, not a sex addict. If he was a sex addict he wouldn't just get massages for a possible handjob. Yes he probably does more than he says on the show, but to say his addictions that had him slit his wrists in a mental hospital as a teen have been transferred to his sex life is incorrect, in my opinion.
I think it also has to be added that despite Stanhope's claim no one knows he's drunk, he's clearly drunk. Not dismissing his points of view, only perhaps the deliverance may have been tempered, slightly.

I get where people are coming from in regards to the Stanhope critiques as well as those who are opposed to Jimmy's addiction rants when he battled 'sobriety' in his teens. I do not think it relates much.
Deletei'm on jimmy's side of the 12 step debate. people really misunderstand 12 step programs. they're not for everybody, but they really do strip away the bullshit, as jimmy says.

ReplyDeleteYou'd be surprised how similar Doug's story about his mother's suicide is, it's not uncommon to hear these kinda stories, albeit not the that level, at work at least once every second month or so. It's the stupidity of euthanasia laws.
