DeleteHey X, OnA finally got around to talking about Snowden and all his stuff, and they agree with Baker that people like him and Manning and Assange are all just enemies of the US.
Delete@The Innocuous Bison: Haven't listened since the Trayvon trial started up (taking a break until jocktober) but I did listen to the Baker interview (thanks for the summaries dalex) just to hear if the recent leaks came up. His position is not surprising. The man is wrong for defending state power and secrecy in these instances, apparently he doesn't actually understand the Manning/Snowden/Assange issues; or simply no regard for anything but protecting state power due to his long service within its structures. Sometimes that means you're incapable of being critical. For the guys to not challenge him on at least a few points is pretty damn awful.

Baker is ex-CIA and that is a culture deeply rooted in maintaining secrecy. I am ex Special Forces and our missions and day-to-day business demanded keeping your mouth shut to protect operational security (OPSEC shhh!). Do not criticize Mike Baker for his position on Snowden, that is the environment he served in and has profited from.

My thoughts in a nutshell.
You have every right to criticize Mike Baker. I was trying to say that with his background in the CIA it is no wonder why he does not agree with Snowden's actions. That is all I was trying to say but when I read my comment it appears as though I am blindly defending the guy.
DeleteNo harm done. I agree with your point, I was mainly focusing on OnA's either unwillingness, or indifference to what is an incredibly serious issue. Jim and Ant mentioned it again today mocking people who are concerned about it, aligning them with those fixated with celebrity scandal. I get it was a passing joke/comment on a comedy show, but it made me feel that little bit more uncomfortable with the whole thing. Ant thinks people having to go to rehab for muttering nigger is like a futuristic movie, and while I agree, what is infinitely more apocalyptic is what the those shady cunts have been creating.
DeleteI knew Baker's stance before he even came on, he's said it many times on Red Eye. I don't agree with it and I'm not surprised Ant and Jimmy especially did as it seems to be the stance of almost everyone that isn't someone like Burr who has said he's all for what Snowden did as no government should have that level of power. Call those people 'conspiracy theorists' if you want, telling people that their government is spying on them is hardly a conspiracy and it's all over mainstream news now that it's not being used just to catch "terrorists".. agencies are covering up the use of wiretaps to gain information on Americans and that's right off Reuters today. If you still buy the "terrorist" rubbish in 2013, you aren't paying attention.

Hate to say it but, in a lot of ways, Baker was right. First of all Manning is a strange duck in a lot of ways, quite probably mentally ill, and he released a lot of shit that put people in the field in danger - sources etc.
DeleteSnowden's a bit different. The guy leaked some things that were out of order and against the US constitution. He seems intelligent and coherent, and he basically gave up a great life for what he says are his principles. If he's sincere then he's impressive, or at least was. If it's some martyr complex thing then it's different. The thing is with Snowden is that you can bet that now he's been given the 1 yr Russian asylum, he's being pumped by the Russians for everything he knows. He'll be well protected and looked after in his "American ex-pat residence" but you can guarantee that he's singing for his supper. If so, would that not make him a traitor, a turncoat?
On a lighter note, Snowden sounds exactly like Travis. Exactly. They even look kind of similar.
Meanwhile, Russian troops have been training with US troops on US soil (Cooperative Nugget) and the DHS have ordered 15,000+ Russian troops... mainstream news but don't listen to it or Obama himself saying to a Russian aide in 2011 that he'd be more 'flexible' in his second term.

Again, even in the court martial no one was able to prove this or provide evidence of anyone in the service having been injured, killed or compromised because of his leaks. If you can then please do. This goes for Snowden as well. Just parroting "he put people in danger" is pro-state establishment rhetoric that lacks any critical analysis or evidence. Even if he did, I would like you to go further than just rhetoric because just saying that is meant to use guilt, fear and emotion as a response rather than critical thought and empirical analysis.
The diplomatic cables were embarrassing, the war logs were insightful and raw, but there wasn’t any increase in danger to troops who were already facing more immediate dangers everyday.

Just to link this to Manning for one second: so if someone leaks information about multiple severe violations in the constitution you might be okay with that kind of action (maybe). He’s probably still a traitor so as a human being he’s still worthless, but it’s good that we know now. However, if someone leaks information about severe abuses in war, including war crimes and lies about war time activity, because domestically the constitution has not been harmed there's no merit to having any of that info be public?
I'm sorry but I believe in order to be a critical thinking, effective and active citizen especially at present we need to know about these kinds of actions that states are taking. There is a problem when a small state of intelligence privilege is formed within a larger state: there’s around 4 million people with classified and top secret clearance in the US; 70% of the state’s intelligence budget goes to private contractors who’s motives are not just security but profit. And then yesterday Reuters broke the fact that the DEA and NSA have been using a secret Special Operations Division to help charge/convict drug offenders and then cover up their methods so that no one (judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys) can see how investigations began.
This environment makes it increasing difficult to separate interests and for citizens to have a discussion on matters regarding their country, and at the same time a lot easier for both the private and public sectors to abuse us and each other. Power protects itself and historically this is disastrous for human life and our potential; which is something human beings generally should be concerned about.
There’s a lot of “ifs” in your assessment of Snowden’s motives and character, and your attachment to cold war political paradigms is a little disconcerting; not to say they may not apply. Just to immediately assume so smacks of cold war bipolar paranoia, as if Russia was still the USSR and relations between the two nations up to this point hadn’t been steadily getting better.

How much more information that is compromising, and I mean deeply compromising to the US state so as to motivate some sort of Soviet-styled information pumping session, could he have? It’s simply not realistic given the situation and what we know. Has it happened in the past? Of course, on both sides.
In fact one Soviet ‘traitor’ the US took in (Anatoliy Golitsyn) alleged the fall of the Soviet Union was simply a ruse, that communist agents still run the Russian state, and eventually over time the US would cripple itself and the USSR would rise and destroy the west. He’s a fucking nut and has no evidence outside of a red star being left on Russian military equipment, but the US gladly took him in and protected him.
Is Snowden an altruistic angel of constitutionality? I’m not making this argument. However, what his leaks through Glenn Greenwald are uncovering is not only domestic constitutional abuses but with every document a member of the US establishment seems to be be caught lying about their intentions, capabilities, and actions (nothing new, I know). Clapper perjured himself in front of Congress and used (literally) Orwellian newspeak to defend himself, and Rogers was just this week shown to be lying when he argued that Snowden was lying about the capabilities in Xkeyscore. Multiple congressmen, for instance King from New York, have accused Snowden of harming US service people but there’s no evidence of this.
To me the general reaction from the US admin. is not the reaction of honest people who are sincere about their intentions regarding national security. These are rigid ideologues who have seen that yes, ordinary people through the system they have built and maintained, can potentially harm their interests and image, and the integrity of state structures that they are parasitically attached to, and feel as if they are justified by ideology alone to punish those who would take such steps.
This is not something new. These kind of people should not be anywhere near power. Their assessment of Snowden and Manning do not come from any actual concern about soldiers, national security, or any kind of altruistic or patriotic/ethical stance.

DeleteI think it's funny that Ant still criticizes Alex Jones even though if he'd just listen instead of constantly going for the joke or asking the same stupid questions, he would agree with a lot of Alex's points as he himself has made most of them in his rants.. Ant and Alex just have different ways of going about it; Ant like a downpour and Alex like an avalanche.
Someone like Jimmy however, while totally welcome to his opinion, gets too busy asking Alex the same one question over and over and over again (that dopey TSA question when Alex was on last) that he either doesn't understand the answer or just wants to parrot that Alex isn't answering.. he does and it's why I think Jimmy just doesn't understand.
alex jones is a performer and entertainer, he doesn't believe any of the things he says. whereas anthony believes everything he says and that's why he brings it to the table, even when it interferes with his job of entertaining.

Shh...the HAARP system is listening... Jim asks logical enough questions, and why not hammer home a question when a guy won't answer a question like "what is 2+2?". My favorite Alex Jones moment is when he said he was invited to join the NWO (illuminati, bildebergs, whatever) but declined on the show. He then refused to out any of them. I guess they made him sign a non-disclosure agreement before the meeting, and of course a guy like him would never disclose private information.
